Microsoft Outage

Many of us woke up to the news this morning that Microsoft have suffered a global outage.

Problems were first reported across a number of countries including the UK, India and Australia.

The incident has affected Microsoft Teams, Outlook, 365, SharePoint and OneDrive.

Microsoft tweeted that it had “isolated the problem to networking configuration issues, and we’re analysing the best mitigation strategy to address these without causing additional impact.”

And Microsoft later added “We’ve rolled back a network change that we believe is causing impact.”

Many firms don’t consider Microsoft to be a threat to their resilience or system availability but this incident has highlighted that Microsoft are no different in terms of being immune to such incidents. Microsoft have processes that don’t get followed and people do make mistakes and given their size Microsoft are an attractive target for cyber attacks.

As a cyber security consultancy we always highlight the risks to our clients from these big market players. In fact this issue brought an important message to one of our clients that Microsoft are not immune to outages and firms need to have resilience plans in place to deal with these outages.
