Seiko Data Breach
Japanese watchmaker Seiko announced this week that a ransomware attack that it reported initially in August has resulted in the breach of about 60,000 records. This included personal data from customers, employees, business partners and job applicants.
Although 60,000 records might not seem like a massive amount of data, the impact of this data breach has far wider implications. The cyber criminals that have stolen the data may target the victims with phishing scams and if so, the net widens as other organisations may get caught up in the aftermath of the attack.
The incident was discovered in July, and in August the Black Cat cybercrime group took credit for the attack which had been ongoing for several months.
In their response to the incident, Seiko cut off external communication with affected servers. They also installed new systems to detect and block unauthorised activity.
SEIKO Group Corporation have contacted all the affected parties and have apologised for the data leak.
The Trend Micro report has recently highlighted a 11.3% increase in the number of new ransomware-as-a-service (RaaS) groups in H1 2023 compared to H2 2022.
